GOALS AND TASKS 2008-2009
Improve Image of NWT Senior’s Society by:
- Improving the NWT Seniors’ Society website www.nwtseniorssociety.ca
- Developing and distribute a newsletter regularly;
- Implementation of a database program listing members, other contacts and partnerships;
- Re-launching the Seniors’ Information Line, 1-800-661-0878;
- Revitalizing the advertising campaign;
- Using website, newspaper, posters, and banners to thank sponsors;
- Producing regular press releases;
- Promoting senior friendly businesses in the NWT;
- Creating and distributing “feature” stories and seniors’ issues bulletins.
Effectively deal with the issue of abuse of older adults by:
- Promoting delivery of elder abuse workshops in every community who asks for our help;
- Reviewing community elder abuse action plans and identify areas in which the NWT Seniors’ Society can help;
- Lobbying for elder abuse shelters;
- Lobbying for service provider training to help with elder abuse in the communities;
- Raising awareness of elder abuse and warning signs;
- Communicating messages to abused elders to seek help and use the Seniors’ Information Line;
- Providing public service announcements in aboriginal languages telling elders where they can get help.
Promote a healthy lifestyle to seniors across the NWT by:
- Using newsletters and website to promote healthily eating and physical activity;
- Encouraging Community Health Representatives to promote health lifestyles for seniors and make presentations to the staff at Government;
- Encouraging the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs and Sport North to organize local recreation programs for seniors;
- Encouraging seniors to approach community recreation coordinators to involve seniors in recreation programs;
- Encouraging donations of recreational equipment to local seniors groups;
- Encouraging youth to teach seniors about computers so they can increase their computer skills.
Involve seniors in saving aboriginal languages by:
- Encouraging seniors to teach their language;
- Using radio and promote the languages;
- Encouraging Aurora College to offer more aboriginal languages courses;
- Creating a seniors’ language development webpage as part of the NWT Seniors’ Society website;
- Encourage parents to speak aboriginal languages at home;
- Identify interpreters who can help the seniors in each community;
- Develop and present the NWT Seniors’ Society position on aboriginal languages at Education Executives’ meeting.
Build better relationships with civil servants who provide direct services to seniors by:
- Getting involved in elections by creatively promoting senior friendly candidates;Investigating senior friendly program.
Lobby to get more seniors’ issues and perspectives in Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum by:
Writing letters to the Minister of Education encouraging more seniors’ issues and
perspectives in Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum.
