Senior Citizens Week 2009
Date: September 20 to September 26, 2009
Theme: Youth and Seniors Learning Together
In the past, Senior Citizens’ Week has taken place in June. This year, Senior Citizens’ Week 2009 will be celebrated during September, commencing on Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 20, 2009. Given the theme, it was felt appropriate to hold the week near the beginning of the school year and invite the schools throughout the NWT to have the children and youth actively participate in shared learning experiences with elders/seniors in the school, the community and on the land.
To this end, the NWT Seniors’ Society has produced an Event Planning Guide for Schools which has been sent out to all NWT Schools and district offices. It is hoped that the guide will stimulate the creative juices and result in a wide variety of events and activities taking place involving youth, children and seniors/elders during Senior Citizens’ Week 2009. Additionally, the Society invites everyone, whether individuals, groups and organizations to get on board on their own or in partnership with the schools and participate during this week of celebration. Events and activities where young and old come together and learn from each other will go a long way to address the generation gap we hear so much about in the NWT. Use the planning guide to help develop your ideas. If you would like to help increase awareness of seniors citizens week you can download the Seniors Week Poster.
