Community Outreach Mini-Workshops

Purpose

The purpose of the mini-workshops is two-fold: to facilitate and promote seniors helping seniors at the community level; and to explore ways and means of connecting elders and youth to address community issues and concerns. Additionally, these events provide an opportunity for seniors/elders to get together, do some work and have a bit of fun in the process.

Funding for this project is provided by the GNWT’S Department of Health and Social Services.

Want a Mini-workshop in your community? If you or your group is interested in having a mini-workshop in your community please contact the NWT Seniors’ Society in Yellowknife.

Recent Workshops

Tuktoyaktuk

On March 24, 2009 twenty-three (23) elders and two youth met at the Kigalik House Elders facility in Tuktoyaktuk. They identified a number of issues that face seniors including housing, the abuse of older adults, a disconnection between youth and elders and more. In groups, the participants worked on a plan to address one or two of the issues identified. Also in groups, the participants spent some time discussing how they might bridge the generation gap in their community.

Hay River

In Hay River, seniors had an event held on April 7, 2009 as part of their Society’s monthly meeting in the Seniors Room at the Whispering Willows facility. Over 30 seniors participated in the event. The issues they raised were similar to those identified in Tuktoyaktuk. However, the two that were of greatest concern were to do with the recent attempt by the GNWT’S Department of Health and Social Services to make significant changes to seniors health benefits and issues relating to housing, in particular, the Whispering Willows units. Some time was spent discussing how the Hay River Seniors’ Society and the NWT Seniors’ Society might work together to address such issues.
